This Newsweek article reviews recent research that indicates our brains are wired for hypocrisy.

Since actions cannot be undone, the only option when they conflict with beliefs—which produces the phenomenon called cognitive dissonance—is to alter the beliefs. When people experience cognitive dissonance, it turns out, brain activity causes us to back and fill, mentally. The result is that we change our beliefs so that they are once again aligned with our actions.

We are also hardwired for the confirmation bias and about a bazillion other cognitive biases and logical fallacies. It’s human nature, hardwired into our brains.  That’s  why it’s so hard — and so necessary — for the critical thinker to be vigilant in guarding his/her thought processes against these biases and fallacies.
